Repentance is action

Eve is a devoted Christian who loves the Lord Jesus Christ. She's born again, attends church regularly, and serves as a church worker. With her compassionate heart, she's often sought out for guidance, and her counsel has been a source of comfort to many. She's been recognized for her gifts and asked to assist the youth councilor.

However, Eve faced a challenging situation when she needed financial support in her final year of studies. Despite her best efforts, she struggled to make ends meet, and her prayers seemed to go unanswered. A well-off acquaintance, who wasn't a believer, promised to take care of her in exchange for a relationship. Eve gave in, compromising her values.

Afterwards, she was consumed by guilt and shame, repeatedly asking God for forgiveness. She felt weak and struggled to say no to her partner. But God, in His mercy, provided an opportunity for her to counsel a young lady facing a similar situation. As Eve shared words of wisdom, she realized she was speaking to her own heart, and her journey of repentance began.

This experience taught her a valuable lesson: when we easily give in to sin, it reveals our lack of fear for God and our distrust in Him. Proverbs 28:14 (ESV) says, "Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity."

No excuse justifies sin, but we thank God for His forgiveness. Romans 6:1-2 reminds us, "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?"

True repentance requires action:

  1. Acknowledge and accept that our actions were wrong.

  2. Tell God about what you have done. This doesn't make God less all knowing but it is a principle to obtain mercy. If you weren't caught and you willingly confess your wrong doing, it shows that you are remorseful.  (Proverbs 28:13) Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

  3. Cut ties with anything that leads us astray, showing our commitment to change. Matthew 5:30 ESV, And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

  4. Pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance and strength to stay on track.

Repentance stems from our love for God. If we're struggling to repent, we must ask ourselves: Do we truly love God? Do we appreciate what Jesus did for us? Why let sin separate us from His love?
